The Hobbit Movie In Doubt Again.
February 12, 2008
New Line are being sued yet again for alleged monies owed, this time to The Tolkien charity estate in the United Kingdom.
The suit, which was filed today (Monday) claims the Tolkien estate and “other” claimants were paid a total of $62 500 as a down payment on the agreed 7.5% of gross profit before shooting began. However, once the movies had been released and grossed around $6 billion worldwide, despite several requests, no other payments have been made.
As if that weren’t bad enough, the plaintiffs are also seeking a court order to give the Tolkien estate the right to remove any rights New Line have to make any other movies based on the works of Professor Tolkien and that includes The Hobbit.
A statement by the lawyer repesenting The Tolkien estate read:
“The Tolkien trustees do not file lawsuits lightly, and have tried unsuccessfully to resolve their claims out of court. New Line has not paid the plaintiffs even one penny of its contractual share of gross receipts despite the billions of dollars of gross revenue generated by these wildly successful motion pictures.”
He also claimed New Line had prevented them from auditing the last two movies, a claim surprisingly similar to the Jackson v New Line farce. Quoted from The Hobbit movie.comWell that's the most recent I can find out - so other then that I'm afraid no.

I really hope they end up making it. Especially if Ian McKellan still plays Gandalf. Though why they would need to do it in two movies is beyond me. :?

I suspect they'd want to do it in two movies to make more money rather then a true nessecity to have two movies. Well at least that's my own personal opinion anyway.

Bah. That'd be stupid. -_- If they were to do it in two movies, then it should be because they have too much good stuff that they can't cut out. (Though I always thought the Hobbit could be captured in a two-hour movie.) Maybe it's just because they'd want to do a huge end battle with the five armies.

I'd hope so if they do do it in two movies, but alas I can imagine it would most likely be more a money making stunt.... though perhaps that's because I'm totally negative about the movie industry

Maybe they actually do have enough material, I dunno. You're probably right, though. >_<
